The bitter start of December in New Jersey continues. Could the snow make for an awkward commute on Thursday morning?

Breathing in the early morning air is just as exhilarating and eye-opening as that first cup of coffee in the morning. The morning lows and also the daytime highs looked and felt more like early January than early December. It wasn’t a record-breaking day, but it’s a sign that fall is approaching and winter is getting much closer.

With all this cold, will there be snow in New Jersey? There are a few chances, but the general storm pattern doesn’t favor significant or even “fun” accumulations. Storms that arrive there will begin in western Canada and are expected to impact the region.

These “Alberta Clippers” are fast-moving, low-moisture systems that dump a small amount of snow over the area. Enough to be an inconvenience if they expired at exactly the right time, i.e. just in time for morning or evening driving times.

Thursday could be just one of these ill-timed systems.

Currently, light snow is possible in New Jersey late Wednesday evening into the early hours of Thursday morning. There is just enough cold air at the surface and aloft that most of the precipitation that falls would be in the form of snow. It will probably stay.

Accumulations will be very small at best. Why? Well, for one, the way the snow falls and the type of storm. This is a fast-moving storm that will bring intermittent snow showers. This start and stop routine limits snowfall.

To be on the safe side, I would give myself a little more time for the Thursday morning routine. On some side streets, sidewalks and driveways, the ground may be an inch or two slippery as you walk out the door.
