The Black Friday frenzy is spreading across India

Once considered retail hype only in the West, Black Friday and Cyber Monday sales are now growing in popularity in India.

Interestingly, these sales days are increasingly gaining a place in India’s travel calendar and competing with traditional holidays. In 2023, Cyber Week saw a price drop of up to 21% to destinations such as the Maldives, while airfares to Malaysia fell 71%, according to data from travel metasearch engine Skyscanner.

Skyscanner also recorded savings to popular domestic destinations during Cyber Week last year.

What started as a niche phenomenon has become a mainstream event with savvy consumers seizing the opportunity for discounted travel. Mohit Joshi, travel and destination expert at Skyscanner, calls it “a trend that reflects India’s growing appetite for value-driven travel.”

“While traditional sales periods such as the festive season and monsoon sales remain culturally significant, the appeal of Black Friday and Cyber Monday is rapidly increasing,” said Joshi. “With the rise of e-commerce and increasing awareness of international travel offerings, more and more Indian travelers are realizing the value of these events.”

In its Horizons report released last month, Skyscanner found that for Indian travelers, cost is an important factor when choosing a holiday destination, be it hotel prices, flights or food and drinks.

Airlines and Black Friday

This year, Indian airlines IndiGo and Air India embraced Black Friday with offers including discounted fares, additional perks and even convenience fee waivers.

The limited sales period for both airlines ran from November 29th to December 2nd. On November 30, Air India Express launched a sale until December 2 and called it ‘Payday Sale’. Akasa Air also started a sale from November 29th to December 2nd.

Online ticket booking platform Indian Railway Catering & Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) Air offered convenience fee waiver for all flight bookings and complimentary travel insurance worth INR 5 million for bookings made on November 29.

For Indian travelers who are constantly on the lookout for great deals, value for money is a top priority, Joshi stressed. Skyscanner’s April 2024 survey shows that almost half of Indians are actively looking for the best deals, while almost a fifth prefer to wait for last-minute deals.

According to Skyscanner, Bali, Kuala Lumpur, Melbourne, Singapore, London and Toronto recorded high search volumes from Indian travelers during Black Friday sales last year.

While international travel is on the rise, domestic routes are also becoming significantly more important.

“This growing appeal of international and domestic travel reflects the evolving preferences of Indian travelers who are finding ways to turn their travel dreams into reality without breaking the bank or compromising on their experiences,” said Joshi.

The demographic change

Indian travelers are known for their penchant for good deals, with cost being a deciding factor for all age groups, Joshi said.

Skyscanner’s April 2024 survey found that 90% of Indian travelers would consider additional trips if they found irresistible deals. Younger travelers (18-25) prefer affordable first trips abroad, underscoring their budget-conscious approach to travel.

Joshi highlighted that Skyscanner tools such as Price Alerts and Cheapest Month appeal to cost-conscious travelers and enable them to plan budget-friendly trips.

Skyscanner has also put together a guide with tips and insights on how to get the best flight deals on Black Friday and Cyber Monday.

“This guide is specially designed for Indian travelers and will help make significant savings during the shopping period,” said Joshi.

Beyond popular destinations, 51% of travelers using Skyscanner explore prices, browsing prices without a specific destination or date in mind, according to data shared by the metasearch engine.

“Travellers come to us at all stages of their travel planning. To solve this problem, Skyscanner offers travelers a unique “Everywhere” search capability that offers a wealth of destination options based on their travel dates and organized by price,” said Joshi.
