The Boston Marathon is big business. Here’s how much money it brings in each year

The Boston Marathon is not just a show for top athletes.

The event is also an economic driver.

A new report compiled using data released by the Boston Athletic Association revealed how much money the marathon brings in. MeetBoston and the UMass Donahue Institute also contributed data for the report.

“The Boston Athletic Association organizes and runs one of the most famous road races in the world: the Boston Marathon,” the report said. “The marathon is a showcase event for the city and creates economic opportunities for companies throughout the region.”

How much money does the Boston Marathon make?

According to this report, the Boston Marathon generated $509,100,000 in state and local economic activity over marathon weekend. The marathon also helped create over $200 million in earned income and just over $330.5 million in gross product.

The report found that the Boston Marathon raised nearly $72 million in charitable causes and created 2,900 jobs through its official charity program.

The report’s participant and viewer surveys also revealed other statistics: $429 was the average nightly rate for visitors to Boston, they typically stayed three nights, and more than half of them came from outside New England.
