The Cardinals could send Gold Glover worth 0 million to the Red Sox at the Winter Meetings

The St. Louis Cardinals could finally get a chance to get their “restart” going at this week’s Winter Meetings in Dallas.

This offseason, St. Louis doesn’t want to hire free agents, but instead wants to cash in and shed some salary through 2025.

One way to accomplish this is to trade Nolan Arenado. He has a no-trade clause, which could complicate matters, but the Cardinals appear more likely to move him than All-Star closer Ryan Helsley.

MLB.com’s Will Leitch suggested the idea that St. Louis should trade the eight-time All-Star to the Boston Red Sox.

“Boston has a little more guys to clear for Arenado than some of the other teams on this list. At least they have a 28-year-old star at third base in Rafael Devers. But Devers has gotten to the point.” “Over his career, moving him to first base makes more and more sense given his consistently subpar defense at the hot corner,” Leitch wrote.

“The Red Sox have indicated they are ready to think more urgently and aggressively than in recent years. Bringing in someone like Arenado who could target the Green Monster would be a clear sign that they want to win immediately.

Arenado hit .272 with 16 home runs, 71 RBI and a .719 OPS in 2024 with St. Louis. It was a far cry from where he was in 2022, when he was a National League MVP finalist along with fellow Cardinal Paul Goldschmidt.

Boston has clearly set its sights high this offseason, and the win against the Red Sox could rejuvenate the bat.

The Cardinals probably won’t get a big deal for Arenado, but could end up with some major league-ready prospects who could help them in 2025.

This would also free up third base for one of Brendan Donovan, Jordan Walker, Nolan Gorman and Thomas Saggese.

St. Louis will be an interesting team to watch at the Winter Meetings this week.
