The Christmas tree farm opens at Christmas time

JONESBORO, Ark. (KAIT) – December began on Sunday, which means the race for the perfect Christmas tree is on.

The Jonesboro Christmas Tree Plantation opened Friday, November 29th for families to stop by and choose a tree.

Owner Brett Lamberson said they work hard every year to prepare the trees.

“We actually have a three-year crop rotation in the field for our trees,” Lamberson said. “These trees are actually four years old, so they grow in a pot for a year and then are planted in the field for three years. And then every year we start shaping them, pruning them and turning them into a Christmas tree view.”

Lamberson said the tree farm is the perfect way to start the holiday season.

“Our job at the tree farm here is to kind of ring in the season for everyone. Our tree farm is based on family tradition: We bring families here, just let them walk through the field, find the perfect tree, cut it down and take it home,” Lamberson said.

Resident Addy Ragsdale said her family goes to the tree farm every year.

“We’ve been doing this for three or four years,” Ragsdale said. “We always come here, cut down a Christmas tree and put it in our living room.”

Caring for a real tree can be a difficult task, but Lamberson has some advice to ensure your tree stays fresh all season long.

“As soon as you get home, if it wasn’t just cut, put a fresh cut on it. Put it in the water as quickly as possible so it drinks water as quickly as possible for the first few days,” Lamberson said. “After that point, just place it up, keep it away from a fireplace and keep it away from heat because that will help it dry out.”

At the tree farm, families can have the experience of cutting down their chosen tree and then enjoy a warm fire and some hot chocolate as workers prepare the tree for transport home.

“We like a real tree because it makes it more Christmassy. It’s tradition, it’s just different, not many people do it anymore,” Ragsdale said.

“We want to offer everyone the same experience. “We want everyone to walk away happy with their tree, and that’s just our main goal,” Lamberson said. “The experience of coming to the tree farm, getting hot chocolate and just running through the trees is what everyone is looking for.”

The Christmas tree plantation is open Monday to Friday from 3:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday from 12:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. until the trees are sold out.
