The Community Food Bank of Central Alabama is increasing distribution to meet hunger needs

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (WBRC) – We’re on your side to help you find groceries if you’re struggling this holiday season.

The Current figures from the US Department of Agriculture show that more people across the country are struggling to feed their families. They say that in 2023, around 18 million households did not have access to enough food.

The USDA reports the numbers for the last four years:

2020: 13.8 million households

2021: 13.5 million households

2022: 17 million households

2023: 18 million households

Unfortunately, more people are hungry here in our area. The Community Food Bank of Central Alabama says it works with more than 300 distribution partners and the need is greater than ever.

They are working to end hunger in our region.

Development director Ginger Pegues says one in six people don’t have enough to eat, and a big reason is that grocery store prices are constantly rising.

Around the holidays, the food bank increases distribution to meet these needs.

“We found out a few months ago that to actually meet the food insecurity needs here in central Alabama, we need to distribute 44 million meals to our neighbors here in central Alabama,” Pegues said. “Last year alone we were able to distribute 21 million meals, so there is still a lot of work to do and the need is increasing.”

The food bank will do it Give away 500 holiday food boxes on Thursday at 9 a.m. at Talladega Superspeedway. The rule is: first come, first served.
