TRANSCRIPT:

As work began on Railroad Ave. Starting late last year, the city of Tallahassee said construction would take a year.

But that’s not exactly the case.

I’m Alberto Camargo, your neighborhood reporter for College Town.

A year has passed and this is still an active construction site.

I explain why the project has been delayed and how long it will take.

In the year since construction began, I’ve told you about lost business and erratic construction schedules that confused neighbors.

The work that was planned by then is still months away.

Eric Gooch, manager of public infrastructure and engineering, says progress will be amplified due to severe weather events this year.

“It also includes rainy days, not including these weather events. On top of that, we had some unknown supply issues and things like that. But these are all things that happen on every project.”

The one on Railroad Ave. The work carried out initially focuses on pedestrians.

A wide multi-purpose path is planned on the west side of the street – work has not yet started there.

There I met FAMU student Laci Smoot.

“As an out-of-state student, I don’t have transportation, so this sidewalk is very important to me because it’s the only way I can get food.”

Laci says she visited Railroad Ave for years while she was in high school. walked up and down.

Despite the delayed schedule, she looks forward to the new design once it’s ready.

“Because driving is so bad here, I appreciate the sidewalks. And the less I have to cross the street, the better.”

In addition to the road work, a new housing project is also under construction along Railroad Ave.

Buildings that were once Roboto Tokyo Grill and the old GMO nightclub were demolished to make way for a five-story, 76-unit apartment building.

The City of Tallahassee says the new timeline for completing the project is early 2025.
