The critically panned Stephen King remake is now available to stream for free

Stephen King is rebooting Carrie

I would like to point out that it is me not Anti-remake. I think remakes have their place in the film landscape. There are at least a handful of reinterpretations that I absolutely appreciate. However, I do Am against remakes that serve no discernible purpose. If a redux doesn’t improve on the original or tell a significantly different story, I have a hard time justifying its existence. Case in point: the 2013 reimagining of Stephen King’s groundbreaking novel Carrie.

To be fair, I love Chloe Grace Moretz. I think it is a gift for film lovers. And I think she gave it her all. However, I just couldn’t relate to Kimberly Peirce’s interpretation.

Carrie Stephen King 2013

Brian De Palmas Carrie is a pretty perfect film. There’s not much to improve. Furthermore, Peirce’s reinterpretation does not cover much new ground. In that sense, it seems like a pretty cynical attempt to capitalize on a high-profile IP.

The film was a moderate financial success, largely thanks to its popularity. Against an estimated budget of $30 million, it grossed $84,790,678 worldwide. But that Carrie redux failed to convince its audience. Both critics and film lovers criticized the film for not standing out from the original, and I couldn’t agree more.

If you consider yourself a fan of this redux, you’re in luck. You can find Carrie (2013) streaming on Tubi (free with advertising) at the time of publishing this post.

The structure for this Misguide update of the Stephen King novel looks like this:

High school can be hard for many teenagers, but it’s especially hellish for Carrie White (Moretz). A shy and awkward teenager raised by a religious fanatic (Julianne Moore), Carrie is a frequent target of bullies. But Carrie has a secret talent: she can use her mind to make things happen. One fateful evening, a particularly cruel prank at her prom leaves her unnerved, and Carrie unleashes her telekinetic powers on anyone who stands in her way.
