The dealer claimed the driver was offered a refund before driving into the building

SANDY, Utah – A man was arrested after police said he intentionally drove a car he recently purchased into the storefront of a car dealership in Sandy.

According to Sandy police, Michael Murray purchased a car from Tim Dahle Mazda Southtowne on Monday morning. In videos sent to FOX 13 News, the car appeared to be a Subaru Outback.

Hours later, Murray, 35, reportedly discovered what he believed were mechanical problems with the car and returned to the dealer in hopes of returning the vehicle, which he described as a “lemon.” However, management at Tim Dahle Mazda Southtowne said they would not take the car back because it was sold “as is.”

Murray allegedly threatened to drive through the front door of the dealership if they didn’t give him his money back.

“We’re like, ‘Woah, we don’t have to do that.’ “Sit down, we can figure this out and find a solution,” said Tyler Slade, platform manager at the retailer.

The following video shows the aftermath of the crash:

Slade claims the dealer offered Murray his money back or another car before ramming into the front of the building. He added that Murray had previously been informed by the dealer that the car required repairs before purchase.

“We were very clear that this car was not a retail car,” Slade said. “Further inspections and some work will be required.”

“In this situation the customer needed the car, it fit their limited budget. And in our eyes we are doing him a favor.”

According to the arrest report, about seven salespeople were near the front door when Murray drove through, but no one was injured in the incident, although the dealership sustained an estimated $10,000 in damage.

Slade told how he and other staff had to act quickly before the attack.

“I was actually just outside the building, but the noise was, as you can imagine, a big bang and lots of employees running, and there was a lot of crowding in the last minute before the customer burst through the front door,” says he called back.

Murray was sentenced to prison and faces charges of criminal mischief and reckless endangerment.
