Forest Rangers from the Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) have worked to locate all persistent hotspots under the ground. When they dug through the charred earth, they checked for signs of heat to ensure that no flames were smoldering under the surface.

“You will see a little smoke or smell a bit of smoke, and then you really have to dig it out and suspend it to find out where the heat comes from,” said John Gagne, a Forest Ranger with the Dec.

In the meantime, Suffolk County has published new information about the likely cause of the fires – and it seems that the first spark comes from a rather unusual source.

According to Kevin Catalina, police commissioner of Suffolk, the fires began when someone in Manorville cooked S’Mores at around 9:30 a.m.

The embers from the backhoffeuer was worn by strong winds on Saturday and spread flames to other areas such as Eastport, East Moriches and Westhampton.

“All of these fires are in a direct border with the strong northwest wind that blows on that day, and it is assumed that the embers traveled out of every fire and continuously began more fires,” said Catalina.

Some residents expressed incredulously.

“It is a bit sad that a nice family event went a little sideways,” said a resident.

“I am surprised that it was s’Mores, yes. It is very unusual, “said another resident.
