The exchange in Woodland Park turns violent; how to deal with the exchange of children

A custody exchange turned violent. The ongoing investigation continues after a man was killed on Friday evening.

The Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) said 28-year-old Luis Morales was shot and killed by the boyfriend of his child’s mother.

The shooter, who is not currently in custody, reportedly received multiple threats from Morales.

According to a family attorney, Greg Quimby, bringing a significant other to an exchange goes against his recommendations.

“Bringing your boyfriend or girlfriend brings trouble,” Quimby said.

Quimby is a long-time practicing attorney and runs his own family practice in the 4 Kids Building in Colorado Springs.

He says that bringing another person as a witness to an exchange is a good suggestion, but who that person is is important.

“Bring your parents, your brothers, your sister, especially mutual friends,” Quimby said. “They bring in people who lower the temperature, not raise it.”

Quimby added that places like the City Market in Woodland Park and outside areas of police stations are often used for exchanges. However, divorced couples can also turn to private organizations or CASA for a supervised exchange.

However, these options can be costly and lack flexibility to fit people’s schedules.

“There are limitations,” Quimby said. “It’s not just a matter of just showing up, signing up and you can see your kids this weekend.”

Another recommendation: take out your cell phone and turn on the video. According to Quimby, people behave much better when they’re on camera.

“The third thing is that camera, and people tend to behave because they know you’re going to take this film or this recording and show it in court and make them look bad,” he said.
