The FBI and New Jersey State Police are investigating drone sightings over Morris County

The FBI and New Jersey State Police are seeking information from the public after drones were spotted flying over Morris County last week.

The drones were spotted in several areas along the Raritan River. Washington Township Mayor Matt Murello confirmed that law enforcement had been notified of the sightings, which occurred mostly at night.

“For about a week now, law enforcement has been notified that people are seeing drones primarily at night,” Murello said.

These drones, which are larger than typical hobby models, have raised concerns due to their proximity to President-elect Donald Trump’s Picatinny Arsenal and Bedminster Golf Course.

Video obtained by WABC-TV, shot by Stephanie Marie of Bridgewater, shows drones flying silently across the sky, about six feet tall and equipped with lights.

“We have also received complaints in this area. While we do see recreational drones being flown sometimes, that does not appear to be the case,” Murello added.

In a joint statement, several law enforcement agencies in New Jersey addressed the concerns:

“County and local law enforcement are aware of recurring reports of drone activity in Morris and Somerset counties and recognize the public’s concern about these repeated sightings.”

Local police said there was no known threat to public safety. However, the FAA is monitoring the situation and has temporarily closed airspace in response to the sightings. Unauthorized use of drones that endangers aircraft or people on the ground can result in a fine of up to $75,000.

Authorities encourage anyone with information to contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI (1-800-225-5324) or submit tips online at Tips.fbi.gov.
