The FBI is investigating reports of large drones flying in New Jersey and is asking the public for help

The FBI is investigating reports of several mysterious nighttime drone flights that recently occurred in central New Jersey and has asked for the public’s help.

Witnesses have spotted a collection of what appear to be drones — larger than those typically used by hobby aircraft — as well as a possible fixed-wing aircraft in several areas along the Raritan River since Nov. 18. It’s not clear why the flights took place or who flew the devices, but federal and state officials emphasize there is currently no known threat to public safety.

The flights have raised questions in part because they took place near the Picatinny Arsenal, a U.S. military research and production facility, and over President-elect Donald Trump’s golf course in Bedminster. The FBI is asking residents to share any videos or photos they may have of the flights, along with other relevant information.

The Federal Aviation Administration this week imposed restrictions on drone flights in the region while authorities investigate the reports.

Law enforcement officials in Morris and Somerset counties issued a joint statement Tuesday saying they were aware of the reports and would continue to monitor drone activity.
