The freshman Republican senator is causing a stir on social media with the “best” answer to Hegseth’s response to the gender question

Conservatives exploded on social media Tuesday following an exchange between Defense Secretary nominee Pete Hegseth and Sen. Tim Sheehy, R-Mont., about gender identity.

“How many genders are there?” Montana’s freshman senator asked Hegseth on Tuesday. “A tough thing.”

Hegseth replied: “Senator, there are two genders.”

“I know that for a fact, I’m a Sheehy so I’m on board,” Sheehy replied, referring to the “she” and “he” that make up his last name.

After Hegseth laughed at the senator’s joke, Sheehy asked Hegseth, a combat veteran, about the diameter of a round fired from an M4A1 rifle and how many push-ups he could do.

The nature of the questioning, particularly the exchange about gender, that Sheehy conducted during the campaign sparked an immediate reaction from Conservatives.

“Exactly,” Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif.,

“Well, it looks like the new senator from Montana is a huge improvement,” said RealClearInvestigations senior writer Mark Hemingway, referring to former Democratic Sen. Jon Tester, whom Sheehy defeated in November.

“Damn MEN!” Wendy Rogers, Republican Senator from Arizona,

Sheehy told Fox News host Sean Hannity on Tuesday night that Hegseth would do a “great job” and “we support him.”

“That’s why my questions were directed the way they were,” Sheehy said. “I wanted to remind people what this job is really about and that it’s about supporting the warfighter and protecting America.”
