The full moon in January is almost here. As seen in Indiana

The first full moon of 2025 is just around the corner. It is also called the “Wolf Moon” because of its connection to the wolves that call during the long January nights. This month’s other astronomical events will give sky watchers something to cry about.

Four planets – Venus, Saturn, Jupiter and Mars – will be visible in the night sky. According to NASA, this doesn’t happen often. Additionally, Venus and Saturn will be exceptionally close to each other during a rare conjunction, and the “Red Planet” will also be remarkably bright thanks to its alignment with the Sun.

Here’s what Hoosiers should know about January’s full moon and other astronomical events.

When is the full moon in January 2025?

Monday, January 13th is the time when the full wolf moon howls brightest, according to NASA. The moon phases in January are:

🌓 First quarter: January 6th.
🌕 Full moon: January 13th.
🌗 Last quarter: January 21st.
🌑 new moon: January 29th.

When is the full moon in January 2025 in Indianapolis, Indiana?

According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, the moonrise in the Indianapolis area will occur at approximately 5:22 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 13, and will cross the meridian at 12:17 a.m. before setting at 8:15 a.m. Tuesday.

Will central Indiana skies be clear during a full moon?

Central Indiana looks cold and partly cloudy, according to the National Weather Service in Indianapolis. Monday’s forecast assumes maximum temperatures of around 29 degrees. AccuWeather forecasts Monday evening could see a low of 17 degrees and partly cloudy skies.

Why is it called the full wolf moon?

According to the Old Farmer’s Almanac, wolves probably howled harder in January because the first weeks of winter covered the ground with frost and snow.

Other names for January’s full moon given by Native American tribes include “Center Moon,” “Freeze Up Moon,” and “Hard Moon.”

One of the astronomical events in January 2025 is the Venus-Saturn conjunction

If you’re planning on watching the night sky this month, keep the following December 2024 dates in mind, according to NASA:

January 13th – Moon obscures Mars: According to NASA, to sky watchers in the US, it will appear as if the moon is passing in front of Mars.
17th-18th January – Conjunction of Venus and Saturn: The two bright planets will be only a few finger widths apart, about 2 degrees, in the next few weeks. Venus and Saturn will be at their closest on January 17-18.
All month – Four planets visible: Sky watchers will be able to see four visible planets this month, something that doesn’t happen every year, NASA writes. Venus and Saturn should be visible in the southwest in the first few hours after dark, followed by Jupiter high above and Mars in the east. You can also observe Uranus and Neptune, but you will need a telescope.
All month – Mars in opposition: The Red Planet is directly opposite the Sun from Earth and shines brightly all night. It is in the east as night falls and in the southwest as dusk falls.
