The increase in the state sales tax will bring Bossier City’s tax rate to an even 10%

KSLA ) – It will soon be easier to mentally calculate sales tax when shopping in Bossier City.

In Louisiana, a 0.55% state sales tax increase goes into effect on Wednesday (Jan. 1).

This means that the total sales tax in Bossier City, currently at 9.45%, will rise to as high as 10%.

Late this year, Louisiana lawmakers approved increasing the state sales tax as part of Gov. Jeff Landry’s tax overhaul, which will eliminate Louisiana’s budget deficit, expected to be nearly $600 million, and threaten funding for health care services and higher education.

Landry’s tax plan, passed by the Louisiana Legislature in November, cuts individual income and corporate taxes by $1.2 billion in the next fiscal year, according to the latest revenue projections.

However, this reduction will be offset by a $1.3 billion increase in sales tax revenue, largely thanks to an increase in the state’s general sales tax rate from 4.45% to 5% by 2029.
