Brian Flores had a complicated departure from the Miami Dolphins after three seasons as head coach, but there is no doubt about his abilities as a defensive coordinator.

According to multiple media reports, the New York Jets have requested an interview with Minnesota Vikings defensive coordinator Flores for their head coaching position. That shouldn’t be a surprise after the Vikings took a 14-3 lead and Flores did a great job orchestrating the defense. But if the Jets do interview Flores, it would be the first since he filed a lawsuit against the NFL over racially discriminatory hiring practices.

Flores filed the lawsuit in 2022, not long after he was fired by the Dolphins. He claimed the league and select teams engaged in racial discrimination in hiring head coaches and executives. There was speculation that the team owners might blame him for this while he continued his coaching career. Flores got an assistant job with the Steelers in 2022 and has been the Vikings’ defensive coordinator for two seasons. With his plans, he has made this unit one of the best in the league.

The Jets are already planning to interview or have already interviewed a huge list of candidates for the job that became vacant when they fired Robert Saleh. Other candidates they have interviewed, are planning to interview or have requested an interview with via ESPN’s Adam Schefter include: Rex Ryan, Josh McCown, Joe Brady, Aaron Glenn, Brian Griese, Vance Joseph, Josh McCown, Matt Nagy, Ron Rivera, Bobby Slowik, Arthur Smith and Mike Vrabel.

There are some interesting names on this list, but Flores stands out because of the lawsuit and other controversies from his time with the Dolphins, such as quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who criticized Flores for how he was treated when the two were together in Miami .

Flores has a very good resume. And it looks like he’ll at least get a chance to interview for a second chance at being a head coach.
