The latest strikeout from Volpe contributes to alarming status trends

Anthony Volpe had the chance to change the game on Tuesday evening.

With two outs in the eighth and the New York Yankees, who have had the Guardians through a run, Volpe entered the first and second place with runners. He worked the count to 2-2 and then swung an Evan Gaddis slider for strike three through our third miss in a row after two fast balls in the zone had gone up.

Polpe ended the night with a walk and a strike. He was not the only one who was neglected in the 3-2 loss, but the moment felt too familiar for Yankees fans-a high-ranking fat spots that ended with a swing and miss for the young short stop of the team.

This pattern has only deepened in its third season.

According to Fangraphs, Volpe only meets 0.209 with an OBP of 0.310 and a striker rate of 27.1%, the highest of his career, according to fangraphs. While he is running more (11.5% Walk rate, compared to 6.1% in 2024), his zone contact rate has dropped to only 73.0%, far below the league average of ~ 83%.

He lacks pitches that he used to do in the zone.

Crys have adapted. Volpe’s heating rate for fastballs has risen to almost 30%and he fought badly for secondary things. When he entered on Wednesday, he was 0-to-13 together against Sliders, Curveballs and Change, whereby 45% north of these playgrounds north of 45%

He strikes the ball harder. Its average exit speed rose to 90.3 miles per hour (compared to 87.7 last year), and it has already recorded a barrel rate of 13.8%, higher than its 2023 and 2024 points. The Yankees even gave him the controversial “torpedo sloger” to lean into this force. But his cable drive rate has dropped to 15.5%, and its fly ball rate is up to 31.0%, many of these poorly hit.

The strikeout on Tuesday evening was not just a missed chance. It clearly showed the bigger problem. Volpe’s decision -making decisions are better, but the results are simply not there.

And for Volpe and the Yankees you can’t afford to miss him so much, especially in the big moments.
