New cars are so much safer than they used to be and generally more reliable, but that doesn’t mean some cars aren’t more reliable than others. However, it can be difficult to figure out which cars to avoid if you don’t want to spend hours reading various forums and trying to piece together reliability information yourself.

Fortunately, our friends at Consumer Reports recently released the results of its annual reliability survey and, after analyzing data collected from more than 300,000 vehicles, released a list of the least reliable cars, trucks and SUVs you can buy new.

These results take into account both the frequency and severity of reported problems in 20 different areas, so problems such as squeaky suspension are not weighted as heavily as drivetrain problems. Additionally, Consumer Reports only considers models that have at least two years of reliability data to calculate a predicted reliability score.

Of course, there will be exceptions to the rule, but if you’re looking for a reliable new car that won’t cause problems, you should probably avoid the vehicles that made it onto this list.
