The legendary Alabama musician celebrated with limited edition coffee

Alabama native James Isbell has won six Grammy Awards, appeared in an Oscar-nominated Martin Scorsese film and threw out the ceremonial first pitch before an Atlanta Braves baseball game.

Now there’s a limited edition coffee for the legendary Americana musician and songwriter.

Jittery Joe’s Coffee, a roastery based in Athens, Georgia, recently added Jason Isbell’s Southeastern Coffee to its collection of coffee blends celebrating Southern musicians with strong ties to Athens.

Before striking out on his own and forming Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit, Isbell, a Green Hill, Alabama native, was a member of the Athens-based Drive-By Truckers Shallows along with his longtime friend and fellow Alabamian, Patterson Hood of Muscle.

“A few years ago we started what we call our music series partnerships, having coffee with Widespread Panic and Drive-By Truckers and Kishi Bashi and a few others,” Michael Ripps, president and co-owner of Jittery Joe, tells AL.com . “That’s why we’re always looking for something new in this area.

“We love Jason and his music,” adds Ripps, also from Alabama. “He was always someone who was on the radar and we got in touch with his people through the Truckers Connection and the Athens Connection.

“It kind of coincided with the (10th) anniversary of his label (Southeastern Records), and everything just fell into place.”

Medium-roasted Guatemalan coffee, available as a whole bean or medium grind, has flavors reminiscent of orange marmalade and peanut brittle.

“Enjoy a cup on a beautiful drive through some Alabama pines, or maybe a thousand miles from a speed trap town,” reads the description on the side of the can, referencing two of Isbell’s most popular songs.

South Carolina-based artist and illustrator Nate Puza, who has designed dozens of Isbell’s concert posters, created the illustration for the limited edition coffee can.

“We wanted to create something unique and collectable that really caught the eye,” says Ripps. “That’s why we worked with Nate and he was great.

“Typically, many of these designers have never used a coffee can template before,” adds Ripps. “It’s a different platform. So it’s usually pretty exciting for them to see what’s working on that cylinder.”

The 12-ounce collectible coffee cans are priced at $18.99 and are available at Jittery Joe’s coffee shops in Georgia and online through the Jittery Joe’s website. The price does not include shipping.

In addition to its Jason Isbell coffee blend, Jittery Joe’s has also released a hot cocoa blend honoring Pete the Cat, artist James Dean’s famous cartoon kitty.

An Alabama native, Dean grew up in Fort Payne and graduated from Auburn University. He now lives in Athens and is a long-time fan of Jittery Joe’s coffee.

Last year, Jittery Joe’s released Pete’s Groovy Brew, a medium-roast coffee packaged in a bright yellow collectible can featuring the cat that appears in more than 100 children’s books.

This year it’s a Pete the Cat cocoa, and Dean has once again collaborated with Jittery Joe’s to design the collectible tin.

“We’re excited to be able to offer coffee and cocoa to Pete fans,” says Ripps. “The parents can drink the coffee and the children can drink the cocoa.”

Jittery Joe’s partnered with Athens chef Peter Dale of Five & Ten and another Athens company, Condor Chocolates, to source the Ecuadorian cocoa for the cocoa blend.

Pete the Cat Cocoa is $17.99 for a 12-ounce can and is available at Jittery Joe’s cafes and online.
