A Wind warning lasts until 4 a.m. Friday. Wind gusts of up to 50 miles per hour are expected.

Gusty westerly winds may reach speeds of over 40 to 45 miles per hour at times.(WDBJ)

Otherwise, lows will fall into the 20s to near 30° range.

FRIDAY

There will be increasing sunshine and seasonal temperatures on Friday. Highs will warm into the 40s and lows into the 50s.

Double whammy this weekend

A much-publicized cold front is crossing the region Saturday. A slightly wintry mix is likely as the moisture begins. As the morning progresses, temperatures will warm at the surface, with cool rain expected for most. The quantities look pretty small see most areas up to 0.10-0.20″ liquid.

Our forecast will be interesting Sunday. A low pressure area will develop in the Deep South, extending to the Southeast and Mid-Atlantic coasts. With colder air behind Saturday’s cold front, this would encourage snow accumulation in most hometowns. That’s why we issued one FIRST ALARM WEATHER DAY for Sunday. We will continue to refine the timing and possible snow amounts over the next day or two.

FIRST ALERT: DANGEROUS COLD NEXT WEEK

The cold air coming next week could rival temperatures from nearly a decade ago. The high temperatures will be 20 to 30 degrees below normal.

In most hometowns, highs only reach into the teens and 20s.(WDBJ Weather)

Low temperatures could fall below zero overnight in some hometowns, especially in higher elevations where snowpack is higher.

Lows will fall into the single digits and below zero.(WDBJ Weather)

Weather models continue to show a signal for a possible storm January 23-24 over the Southeast/Mid-Atlantic/Northeast. Although we are not yet in the time frame in which concrete details about the path and intensity are determined, there is still a signal of a possible storm. We will continue to monitor the situation closely in the coming days.

We could see another winter storm later next week. It all depends on the route.(WDBJ7)
