The local plumber recommends using caution when operating garbage disposals this Thanksgiving

QUINCY (WGEM) – As you prepare your Thanksgiving dinner this year, be mindful of how much food goes into the trash can at once.

That’s the advice from Keck Plumbing owner David Keck.

He told WGEM that he is typically inundated with calls every Thanksgiving evening and in the days following. To avoid potential constipation, Keck recommends using water to your advantage.

“I always try to recommend that people run plenty of water before they actually put food in the disposer,” Keck said. “Make sure they use plenty of water during and afterward. Let it run for 15 to 30 seconds.”

Keck said common sense can go a long way toward preventing clogged pipes. Clogged pipes cause numerous problems in the home, including water pressure and drainage problems.

Another piece of advice from Keck is to become more informed about the condition of your home.

“I think it’s important to know some of the inner workings of your home. If you have a home that has older plumbing, older plumbing, maybe steel or cast iron pipes, those are probably the homes that are more prone to problems,” Keck said.

He said plastic pipes typically have fewer clogging problems than the previously mentioned pipes used in older homes.
