The Mets won’t wait much longer for Pete Alonso’s decision

The New York Mets are expected to reunite with first baseman Pete Alonso. However, they are reportedly running out of patience in the negotiations.

Joel Sherman and Jon Heyman of the New York Post reported Wednesday that the Mets want a decision from Alonso soon on a potential deal. Sherman and Heyman noted that while progress has been made in structuring a deal, there remains a significant financial gap.

Alonso had reportedly offered the Mets a three-year contract with opt-outs to fill the void. The three-year contract and at least one opt-out would remain in place during ongoing discussions.

The Mets have begun exploring other options. They have reportedly inquired with the Blue Jays regarding first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. Guerrero and the Blue Jays are also embroiled in their own differences as they try to negotiate an extension. The Toronto first baseman has cited the start of spring training as the deadline to finalize a contract.

The Mets have other holes on the roster that need to be addressed. The bullpen is a particular area of need – while closer Edwin Diaz is among the majors’ best, he has few other proven options available to him. Adding a reliever like Tanner Scott would make a difference. Likewise, there are questions at second base and center field, where Jeff McNeil and Tyrone Taylor are each at the top of the depth chart.

Potential passers won’t stay on the market forever as the Mets wait for Alonso. The first base market is also drying up and there are fewer potential landing spots for the All-Star slugger. The Mets and Alonso continue to be a perfect match, but time is running out.
