The Miami Dolphins are making a surprising quarterback change before their competitive game against the Jets

The Miami Dolphins have been trending in the right direction since Tua Tagovailoa returned from injury, but after a loss to the Packers on Thanksgiving, they are (5-7) and have an unlikely chance of making the playoffs at this point.

But if the Dolphins can find a way to win their final five games of the season, there’s a chance they can sneak into the AFC Wild Card race and compete in January.

While Tagovailoa is playing as well as any QB in the NFL and helped lead the Dolphins to three straight wins before the loss to Green Bay, his absence took a huge toll on Miami.

In his first game on the sidelines, with Tagovailoa recovering from a horrific concussion, the Dolphins turned to Skyler Thompson against the Seattle Seahawks. Thompson finished the game with 107 yards and no touchdowns as Seattle dominated 24-3. He was eventually replaced by Tim Boyle.

Without Tagovailoa to lead the Dolphins’ high-octane offense, the unit couldn’t function and Miami fell to the bottom of the NFL’s offense during that span.

Despite the addition of dual-threat QB Tyler Huntley — the Dolphins continued to make Thompson the backup in the event of Tagovailoa — who was prone to injury and another concussion could end his career.

Before Sunday’s must-win divisional game against the New York Jets, Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel named Huntley the backup QB while Thompson assumed the third-team role.

The Miami Dolphins selected Thompson in the seventh round of the 2022 draft and he got a chance to start playoff games to finish this season after Tagovailoa and Teddy Bridgewater were sidelined. Thompson looked completely overwhelmed and unprepared, but Miami continued to keep him in the backup role until now.

This move could be an indication that Thompson’s time in Miami may be coming to an end.
