The minimum wage is about to increase in New York: see how much it will rise

New York’s statewide minimum wage is set to increase by 50 cents per hour in 2025.

The increase is scheduled to take effect Jan. 1, according to the state Department of Labor.

The increase will bring the minimum wage to $16.50 an hour in New York City, Westchester County and Long Island. In the rest of the state, including Upstate New York, the new minimum wage is $15.50 an hour.

For the New York City area, the increase represents an increase of about 3.1%, and for the rest of the state it is about 3.3%.

The increase means an additional $20 per week for a minimum wage earner working a full-time job that works 40 hours per week. In New York state, that would equate to a salary of $620 per week.

The minimum wage in New York is set to increase by another 50 cents in 2026.

Thereafter, the minimum wage increases by a three-year moving average of the consumer price index for urban wage earners and office workers in the Northeast region.

The increases in 2025 and 2026, as well as the planned indexation of wages to inflation, are the result of policy changes previously decided as part of the state budget process.

The legislation included provisions allowing wages to be frozen if the state’s economy weakens, so wage increases are not guaranteed.

The minimum wage in New York has increased significantly over the last 10 years.

A decade ago it cost $7.25 an hour. Once the final increases take effect, New York State wages will have increased over 120% from this level.
