The Missouri Dept. of Conservation gives tips on choosing and caring for the right Christmas tree

MISSOURI. (KFVS) – The Missouri Department of Conservation is reminding people to choose a good tree and care for it properly if you plan on getting a live tree.

According to MDC, there are a few things to consider when purchasing a live tree:

Choose a freshly felled tree: Ensuring that the tree is freshly cut will help you keep it healthy for longer. To test freshness, the MDC says you can gently shake one of the branches. According to MDC, it is normal for a few needles to fall, but if a lot of needles fall, it is a sign that the tree is not fresh.

Use a Live Evergreen: An alternative to a felled tree is a living evergreen. According to MDC, you can use it as a fresh Christmas tree and when the holiday season comes to an end, you can plant it in your garden.

Water: According to the Missouri Department of Conservation, water is the most important factor in caring for your tree. The MDC says when you bring your tree home, the first thing you should do is cut a half-inch off the bottom of the trunk and place it in a tree stand filled with water. They also recommend checking the water level regularly and using a lever to let the water fall under the tree trunk.

Keep it in a safe place: The MDC would like to remind you to choose a location for your tree that is not near a heating vent, wood stove or fireplace, as this could dry out the tree. They also say that you should check that the cords on all lights are not worn or frayed, and that you should never leave the lights on when you leave the house or go to bed.

Recycle or replant when the holidays are over: When the holiday is over, the MDC says planting or recycling your tree is one of the best ways to dispose of it. Some of the ideas they give for recycling include shredding or shredding for mulch or dumping in a pond to improve fish habitat. If you used a live evergreen and your soil is still soft enough, plant it outside your home.
