The most common mistake people make when protecting their pipes in the winter

ALBANY, Ga. (WALB) – Metro Power in Albany says it is receiving numerous calls about frozen pipes because people often don’t prepare their homes for winter.

“When we get a cold snap here in South Georgia, we’re not as prepared for it as some people are, and it takes us by surprise,” said Bentley Griffin, Metro Power’s plumbing service division manager.

Exposed pipes can easily lose heat, while pipes covered with Styrofoam prevent heat loss and prevent water from freezing and the pipe breaking.

They recommended homeowners ensure consistent water flow to ensure your pipes don’t burst.

“Most of the time you want to keep it away from your main water source or supply. As long as it’s a constant drip or even stream. Depending on how cold it is and how long it’s been, it’s always a good idea to drip a little more rather than a little less,” Griffin suggested.

RV residents are at higher risk for frozen pipes. They typically have the most exposed pipes with the least protection.

Even if your faucets are dripping and your pipes are insulated, there is still a risk of your pipes bursting.

“If it’s cold for a long period of time, sometimes it can still happen. It just depends on how cold it is and how long it stays cold,” says Griffin.

Metro Power recommends residents keep their thermostats at a regulated temperature and have their insulated pipes checked annually. If you need assistance with installation, contact Metro Power at 229-432-7345.
