The NATO-Ukraine Council meets after Russia’s use of the Oreshnik missile

The NATO-Ukraine Council met on November 26 to respond to Russia’s use of the new Oreshnik intermediate-range ballistic missile (IRBM), the NATO alliance said in a press release.

According to the releaseSenior Ukrainian military officials briefed council members via video link. The meeting took place at NATO headquarters in Brussels at ambassadorial level.

Russia first fired the gun in an attack on Dnipro on November 21st. Shortly afterwards, Russian President Vladimir Putin claimed that “there are currently no ways to counter this weapon.”

Zelensky contradicted Putin claimed on November 24 that experts were currently analyzing the missile’s debris and working with allies to find an appropriate response.

“The use of this capability will not change the course of the conflict nor deter NATO allies from supporting Ukraine,” NATO spokesman Farah Dakhlallah said earlier in an alliance statement, referring to the use of IRBMs.

NATO added in its statement that Russia’s use of the Oreshnik missile was an attempt to terrorize Ukraine’s civilian population and intimidate those who assist Ukraine in its defense against Russia’s “illegal and unprovoked aggression.”

During the discussions, Ukraine also stressed the need for support from NATO allies to strengthen its air defenses against such future attacks.

Russia continues to attack Ukrainian targets ahead of an expected harsh winter as Russia attacks energy infrastructure. Overnight stay on November 25th, Russia started a record 188 drones in Ukraine, with Ukrainian air defense reportedly able to shoot down 76 drones in 17 oblasts.

On November 25th: Delegates from the parliaments of the NATO member states expressed their support In a resolution adopted by the NATO Parliamentary Assembly, it was decided that Ukraine would become the 33rd member of the alliance. Independent of NATO, the assembly has no direct role in overseeing NATO policy.

The assembly called on member states to “intensify their political and practical efforts to help Ukraine receive an invitation and become the 33rd member of NATO as soon as possible,” the resolution said.
