The Pittsburgh Steelers are waiving the running back and making room on the roster for a promising cornerback

The Pittsburgh Steelers have removed veteran running back Jonathan Ward from their active roster, the team announced Wednesday. This move opens up a spot on the active roster that cornerback Cory Trice Jr. will likely fill.

Trice has been practicing for the last three weeks, but the Steelers decided not to activate him because he needed to continue acclimating after missing seven weeks with a hamstring injury. Pittsburgh has until tomorrow before practice to activate Trice, and it appears that will almost certainly happen.

Trice was a seventh-round pick by Purdue who missed his rookie season with a torn ACL. He had a strong start to the year and even made his first career interception against the Denver Broncos before suffering a hamstring strain.

As for Ward, he will likely be brought back to the team’s practice squad as a running back. However, post-trade deadline rules require him to clear waivers, even as a veteran. If the Steelers want to bring him back, they would have to release someone from the practice squad.
