The planned blockbuster ships of the Phillies and Blue Jays competed for an million all-star flight to Toronto

The Philadelphia Phillies largely refused to make any changes to their roster for the 2024 season. This will not be the case in 2025.

After two narrow playoff misses, the Phillies were convinced they had the recipe for a World Series victory. But their rocky second half of the season and quick postseason loss to the rival New York Mets told a much different story.

Once the most carefree team in Major League Baseball, it seemed tense and uncertain heading into the postseason. Plus, the lineup went silent at the worst possible time, and that could impact a first-time All-Star.

Third baseman Alec Bohm has been the subject of intense trade speculation and his work ethic has even been questioned by unnamed Phillies sources. It seems like a change of scenery is in order, and a trade proposal would send him into an entirely new environment.

The Score’s Brandon Wile recently predicted that Bohm would be headed to the Toronto Blue Jays this winter, filling the last-place Blue Jays’ obvious need in their own quest for a return to the playoffs.

“It feels like the relationship between Alec Bohm and the Phillies has reached a point where both parties would benefit from a change. The Blue Jays represent that new beginning when they acquire him from Philadelphia after failing to engage in the bidding war for Bregman,” Wile said.

“Bohm, who still has two years of team control, fits Toronto’s competitive window and gives them another right-handed power bat. His .779 OPS last season would have ranked second on the club, while his 44 doubles would have tied him with the team leader.”

The 28-year-old Bohm appeared to be on his way to the breakthrough Phillies fans had always dreamed of in 2024, but his All-Star first half ended in disappointment. He hit just .251/.299/.382 in 49 games after the Midsummer Classic and ended up on the bench in one of the Phillies’ four postseason games.

Things may not be entirely clear yet, but the amount of trading speculation currently circling Bohm certainly feels like an omen. A fresh start could benefit Bohm, the Phillies and the Blue Jays at the same time if everything goes right.
