The Grade II listed Foss Bridge House building in Walmgate was built for the linen merchant WWJ Whitehead – before being taken over in 1915 by the hardware store FR Stubbs, which operated on the site until the building was put on the market and converted into a restaurant in 2001 2006.

While the interior was still under construction, owner Salem Khalifa said: “As with our current location, where we have retained elements from the 1928 George Mason store, we are keen to celebrate York’s rich history. “

While the previous location at 13 Fossgate is currently unoccupied and there is a sign in the window indicating that Marzano has moved down the street, there are fears that something could soon take over the empty restaurant.

Salem said at the time, “The future looks very bright” about whether there were plans for the previous location.
