The recent mock trade presents the Timberwolves with an excellent opportunity to salvage the Randle situation

It’s trade season in the NBA and numerous deals are being planned for every team in the association. Various opportunities for improvement could emerge for many competing teams. When it comes to the Minnesota Timberwolves’ situation, the most obvious move they could possibly make would be trading Julius Randle.

We’ve seen enough sampling by now to know that Randle’s fit into the Wolves’ roster is shaky at best. His impending free agency decision this summer could hamper the team’s long-term decision-making by forcing them to part ways with other valuable contributors. Therefore, trading him at the deadline could be the best option.

This week, Bleacher Report’s Greg Swartz laid out a mock trade for every NBA team. In the game he envisioned for the Timberwolves, Minnesota sends Julius Randle to the San Antonio Spurs and gets three players back in return: Tre Jones, Keldon Johnson and Malaki Branham. No picks would be included in this presented deal.

Timberwolves can increase depth and future options with this trade

All in all, Swartz’s mock trade would be a fantastic way for the Timberwolves to get Randle off the books should they decide that’s the direction they want to go. Julius’ move would give Minnesota the financial flexibility to re-sign key impact players like Naz Reid and Nickeil Alexander-Walker. If they are determined to achieve this result, the type of players they get back wouldn’t even be the biggest problem.

But this deal with Spurs in particular would provide Wolves with a significant return. Keldon Johnson is a solid winger who could be excellent off the bench, allowing Naz Reid to move into the starting lineup. Malaki Branham is a versatile scorer who would add additional offensive power to the bench.

As for Tre Jones, he would give Minnesota an experienced ballhandler who could become more useful if Mike Conley shows some age. Jones doesn’t necessarily have to be a long-term fit for this team, as Rob Dillingham still has more potential. But having Tre would give the Timberwolves the opportunity to continue to assess how far along they think Dillingham is and then make other moves accordingly.

If the Wolves feel it best to find a new home for Julius Randle at the deadline, a similar move would be an excellent option.
