Clock: Island Vulcano spits out Lava after the outbreak

Tourists and residents were collapsed in South-west Island when a volcano broke out and threatened a city and a popular attraction.

The volcano has brought Lava in a fiery exhibition of orange and red, since the outbreak began in the morning, which generates a huge crack in the ground, which has grown at 1.2 km (0.75 miles).

In the volcanic area, several earthquakes occurred all day.

The volcano is located near the fishing town of Grindavik and the famous Blue Lagoon Spa. A small number of people refused to evacuate the city, reported local media.

The Asrun Kristinsdottir, who lived in Grindavik, told the BBC that she fled after hearing emergency sirens in the early morning.

Most of her life near the volcano meant to live that she was always packed and ready to go. But she said this time was different because she prepared for “constant” quakes when she prepared for the departure.

The protective barriers for grindavics were injured when a new eruptive fissure opened a few hundred meters inside, the Icelandic meteorological office (IMO) reported.

It was “extremely difficult” to see this activity in the city’s security barriers, said Ms. Kristinsdottir, who acts as President of the city council of Grindavik.

People had been asked to “leave the danger zone,” said the region’s police commissioner, Ulfar Ludviksson, to Iceland’s RUV broadcaster. But he said that people who have decided in “seven or eight houses there … … … to stay in the city”.

There was fears that the city was “in danger that lava flows will penetrate the inhabited area,” said Rikke Pedersen from the Nordic Vulcan Center.

In the northern part of Grindavik, a hot water tube is broken, which confirms that considerable cracks have occurred in the city, the IMO said.

However, the volcanic activity was declined in the early afternoon on Tuesday.

Thormar Omarrson decided to evacuate his house in Grindavik near the volcano last year. He said he was “heartbreaking”.

Thormar Omarrson operates a pizza restaurant in Grindavik, which was closed due to the outbreak.

He informed the BBC that he had lived in the city for 30 years, but moved with his family in 2024 after the authorities had warned of the increasing risk that was equipped with eruptions.

Leaving was “heartbreaking,” said Omarrson. “My family was born and grew up there and now her community is gone.”

He said some of his friends in Grindavik had refused to evacuate: “If you live there in your house, you would like to be left alone in your house.”

Most of the 4,000 inhabitants of Grindavik were in mass evacuation due to the dangers of volcanic activity in 2023. The volcano has broken out several times since then.

The length of the magma, which was formed on Tuesday under the crater series, stretched to about 11 km (6.8 miles) – the longest that has been measured since November 11, 2023, said meteorologists. The Magma corridor extends about 3 km further northeast than in previous outbreaks.

Based on the current wind direction, gas pollution from the outbreak to the northeast will travel to the capital area, added the IMO.

The outbreak, which started around 9:45 a.m. local time (10:45 BST), occurred after several earthquakes had hit the area known as Sundhnuk Crater.

Several outbreaks have occurred on the Reykjanes Peninsula since 2021.

The last time the peninsula had a period of volcanic activity was 800 years ago – and the outbursts lasted for decades.

Iceland has 33 active volcanic systems and sits over the so-called MID-Atlantic Ridge, the boundary between two of the largest tectonic plates in the world.
