The newbie The boss warned fans that season 7 will test two couples – Chenford aka Tim Bradford and Lucy Chen, as well as John Nolan and his wife Bailey Nune. In other words, we were warned.

During the sixth season, Tim (Eric Winters) broke up with Lucy (Melissa O’Neill) as a form of self-punishment for crossing the line during an operation and jeopardizing Lucy’s career.

According to the trailer for season seven, the Us weekly Released exclusively on Thursday, January 2, the connection between the two is not lost. But as they share a steamy moment together – a shirtless Tim is involved – the showrunner recounted TVLine In an interview published Thursday, he said Tim isn’t done overcoming his inner demons.

“At one point we have a scene where he’s in a veterans support group, so he’s still trying to work on himself.” Alexis Hawley said of Tim while speaking to the outlet.

Hawley noted that the “good news” is that Tim “understands what he did wrong,” he’s just trying to “figure out” the “why.”

“The worst thing he could have ever done to himself was breaking up with Lucy, and he’s going to fully figure that out and then deal with the fallout as well,” the showrunner explained.

Fans previously got a glimpse of Tim and Lucy’s undeniable love for one another when she saved his life in the season six finale. According to Hawley, that bond will continue to grow.

“We really wanted to start this season with a positive attitude towards Tim and Lucy. “Obviously they did a lot of work at the end of last season, especially Tim,” he said. “It felt like they were getting back together in at least a positive way.”

Looking ahead, Hawley says Chenford needs to ask himself, “Okay, we’re on to the next chapter — what does that look like?”

The TV writer added that their new normal will include a bet over the training of the LAPD’s new recruits.

This bet is allowed The newbie Hawley explained that “it allows us to get into the competition between them that was inherent in them from the beginning, even when he was basically their boss.”

The hope that Tim will win Lucy back is just one of the big romances to keep an eye on in the new season. Nolan (Nathan Fillion) and Mrs. Bailey (Jenna Dewan) received shocking news at the end of season six: Bailey’s ex-husband Jason Wyler (Steve Kazee), broke out of prison along with Oscar Hutchinson (Matthew Glave).

“Jason will ultimately be the biggest threat in the first half of the season,” Hawley told the outlet. “He’s kind of an existential threat because he’s a threat to the family, especially to Bailey.”

As the first part of the season progresses, viewers learn more about “the trauma of Bailey’s relationship with Jason that maybe she hasn’t dealt with yet, the abusive relationship that she had with this guy,” he continued.

Hawley added: “That gets lost in the fear of the reunion, because part of the drama of the first half of the season is, ‘When is he going to show up?’ And that feeling of constantly being afraid is obviously not healthy.”

Nolan and Bailey’s previous conversations about potentially expanding their family through adoption will also “resurface,” according to the showrunner. “Without giving anything away, I don’t know what else to say,” Hawley concluded.

Season 7 of The newbie Premieres on ABC on Tuesday, January 7 at 10 p.m. ET.
