Tesla is getting into the festive mood early with an over-the-air update for its vehicle fleet that will introduce numerous new software features.

Arguably the biggest news is the launch of a tailored app for Apple Watch owners, allowing them to use the smartwatch as a key to remotely lock and unlock the vehicle, view battery status, turn on and adjust the air conditioning. and open the “frunk” remotely.

There have also been a number of mapping improvements, with the ability for drivers to set a desired energy level upon arrival, allowing the route planner to add or remove charging stops along the journey depending on the desired level set.

Estimated diversion times have also been introduced for the first time, with the mapping system intelligently adding time to the ETA if the user wishes to stop for a coffee or a quick charge. A precipitation overlay has also been added to the maps, which records live weather data and clearly visualizes it at the destination in the form of a rain radar.

Just in time for the holiday season, Tesla has also included a few festive treats, including the ability to transform the Cybertruck avatar into Santa’s sleigh with reindeer, elves, and more. Unfortunately, this feature is exclusively reserved for Cybertruck owners.

If Santa isn’t your thing, Tesla now also offers custom wraps for the Cybertruck avatar displayed on the screen, with the option to choose from a range of pre-loaded designs or custom creations. A post on X states that details about the template and instructions will be released via Github at a later date.

Similar to Rivian’s Halloween sayings, this allows owners and passersby to “enjoy” the themed lighting of the vehicle’s front and rear lights when the vehicle is parked.

Finally, Tesla’s fart sounds have also been improved with a new “butt detection” feature in “Fart on Contact,” which turns virtually every seat in a Tesla into a virtual whoopee cushion.

It joins the Fart on Demand and Fart on Turn Signal features when the software update becomes available to owners in the coming weeks.

In addition to the new features included in the upcoming 2024 Holiday Update, Tesla is also gradually releasing FSD V13.2 to a handful of its trusted early testers in order to roll it out to the rest of the fleet before the new year.

Although we’re still a long way from Musk’s much-promised Unsupervised Full Self-Driving (FSD), the update adds a number of serious features that will dramatically reduce the number of interventions – or instances in which the driver has to take over driving tasks.

After the OTA update, any vehicle – except the Cybertruck – with Tesla Hardware 4 (called A14 and introduced on 2023 or later models) will be able to perform parked-to-parked FSD.

This means users can set their destination while the vehicle is stationary, select FSD mode, and the vehicle will now automatically shift from Park to Drive or Reverse to get to their destination.

The update also means vehicles can essentially perform three-point turns and other tricky maneuvers without driver input, while also being able to find and position themselves in prime parking spaces at a selected destination without user intervention.

Tesla has long been raving about a fully autonomous future, and Musk hints that unattended, fully autonomous driving will arrive in the second quarter of 2025. However, many believe that these goals are still ambitious given the current patchy performance of FSD software.

However, the latest software update means that some owners will theoretically be able to drive from a parking position in a driveway or garage to a parking space at a chosen destination without having to lift a finger – just by pulling behind the Sit on the steering wheel and pay attention to the road if the system requires user intervention.

Yes, Tesla’s system still requires an eye on the road for both safety and legal reasons, but the updates feel like big steps toward a fully autonomous future.
