Kohberger was originally scheduled to go on trial in October 2023, but his lawyer said the defense would not be ready in time. Back then, Kohberger later waived his rights to a speedy process. The trial against Kohberger was then scheduled for June 2025. At that time, the trial was scheduled for Latah County, where the murders occurred.

Latah County Circuit Judge John Judge said he expected the trial to last three months, including two weeks for jury selection, eight weeks for the actual trial and another two weeks for the verdict, sentencing and everything else , what’s left. CBS News previously reported. The new negotiation dates extend over a similar period of time.

But early September, judge ordered the trial to be postponed to another part of Idaho and said he believed extensive media coverage of the case and statements from other officials would make it impossible for Kohberger to get a fair trial. The concern was confirmed by Kohberger’s lawyers.

The Idaho Supreme Court moved the trial to Boise, Idaho, more than 300 miles from Latah County. Kohberger was was taken to prison there last month.

Goncalves’ family criticized the handling of the trial. said in a statement this spring that they were frustrated by how long the case was taking to move through the justice system.

“This case is becoming a rat race of motions, hearings and delayed decisions,” the family said.
