The USDA is investing to support waste management in Southern Idaho

BURLEY, Idaho (KMVT/KSVT) – USDA Idaho Rural Development Director Richard Rush announced the department is borrowing $36.5 million for the Southern Idaho Waste District to help protect public health .

“Landfills are no longer just places where waste is transported. “They are now sophisticated facilities that not only accept waste, but also generate electricity from methane, address numerous chemical and water quality issues, and have a large skilled workforce,” Rush said. “Southern Idaho Solid Waste is one of the most innovative facilities in Idaho. Seven county commissioners came together to make it all happen. Congratulations and I’m so glad USDA Rural Development was able to help.”

The Southern Idaho Solid Waste District (SISW) will improve infrastructure and safety measures. SISW manages over 320,000 tons of waste annually, of which 40,000 tons are recyclable. The district serves residents of Blaine, Cassia, Gooding, Jerome, Lincoln, Minidoka and Twin Falls counties and future residents will benefit from this project.

“This funding is a significant step forward for our communities,” said Nate Francisco, Executive Director and CEO of SWIS. “It allows us to improve our facilities, increase safety and manage waste more efficiently, while keeping costs down for our customers. We are grateful for USDA’s support to help us continue to meet the growing needs of south-central Idaho.”
