Southern Methodist 77, Washington State 60

PALM DESERT, Calif. – Things went wrong late for Washington State as it ended its Acrisure Holiday Invitational tournament run with a loss to SMU.

The Cougs (6-2) led 31-27 at halftime, but the Mustangs (6-2) stormed back after halftime and took command in the final 10 minutes of play to secure the decisive victory. A 43-20 advantage in rebounds for SMU represented the largest overall statistical disparity between the teams.

Nate Calmese led Washington State with 15 points and six assists. Isaiah Watts (12 points, five rebounds) and Ethan Price (12 points) were the Cougs’ other top contributors.

Coughs fall in five

PULLMAN – Washington State gave the home crowd plenty of hope during a shaky West Coast Conference battle against San Francisco at Bohler Gym, but ultimately fell to a five-set loss.

The final score was 12-25, 27-25, 25-20, 21-25, 15-13 in favor of the visitors.

As a team, the Cougs (16-10, 11-6) were ahead in kills (65-55), aces (12-6), assists (59-51) and digs (72-69), but ultimately were less opportunistic than their opponents in the decisive second and fifth sets.

Katy Ryan led the WSU offense with 21 kills. Jaden Walz had 39 assists, Lucie Blazkova had nine blocks and Emma Barbero had 24 digs plus six aces.
