You don’t have to spend a fortune to get a good smartwatch or wearable. A good option for iPhone users is the Apple Watch SE, the company’s cheapest smart watch. Black Friday deals have brought the price down to $149, which is 40 percent off and the lowest price we’ve ever seen.

The Apple Watch SE is a good choice for iPhone users who haven’t yet gotten into the smartwatch ecosystem or perhaps are stuck with a much older Apple Watch but don’t need a flagship model. If you’re looking for something a little more advanced, you’re better off with the Apple Watch Series 10, which is also currently on sale at a record low price for Black Friday and is our pick for the best smartwatch overall.

The second-generation Apple Watch SE has dropped to its lowest price yet. A 40mm GPS model (i.e. without LTE connectivity) is down to $149.

The second-generation Apple Watch SE is our pick for the most affordable Apple Watch, and we gave it a score of 89 in our 2022 test. It has the same chipset as the Apple Watch Ultra and Series 8 and should feel faster if you’re coming from, say, a Series 6 or earlier model.

The SE shares some, but not all, features with the flagship Apple Watches. It supports accident detection, heart rate monitoring and emergency calls and is waterproof to 50 meters. We felt that the screen was easy to read even in bright sunshine. The fitness tracking is accurate (which is pretty important!). Perhaps most importantly, the Apple Watch SE is lightweight and easy to wear.

The Ion-X glass isn’t quite as robust as the sapphire glass on other newer Apple Watch models, so you’ll probably want to be extra careful with it. Other features found on other Apple Watch devices that are missing here include an always-on display, blood oxygen monitoring, and a temperature sensor. The very practical double tap function is also not available here.

While we think this is a good price for the second-generation Apple Watch SE, it’s worth keeping in mind that a new model could launch in the coming months. Apple is reportedly working on an Apple Watch SE with a plastic case to lower the price and allow for bolder color options. However, Apple is unlikely to announce this model before next year.
