The Yuma Fire Department is pushing for safety as the use of space heaters increases

YUMA, Ariz. (KYMA, KECY) – With cooler weather in Yuma, the fire department is reminding residents to prioritize safety when using heaters this winter.

Improper use of heaters and other equipment can have devastating consequences, including fires and carbon monoxide poisoning.

The department recently responded to 369 emergency calls in a single week, including 12 fire incidents, 29 motor vehicle accidents and 303 medical emergencies.

Fire-related calls included a kitchen fire and a gas stove leak, highlighting the need for greater attention and caution.

To prevent accidents, the Yuma Fire Department (YFD) offered several safety tips:

  • Keep portable heaters at least 10 feet away from combustible materials or structures.
  • Turn off the heating when you leave the room or go to bed.
  • Never use ovens as a heat source.
  • Make sure all fuel burning appliances are vented outdoors to prevent carbon monoxide buildup.
  • Test smoke detectors at least once a month.
  • Avoid using extension cords with heaters and check propane tanks and hoses for damage.

Fire Capt. David Padilla Jr. emphasized the importance of these precautions, noting that even small steps can make a big difference.

“We want to educate our community,” Padilla said. “By disseminating these safety tips, we hope to prevent incidents, fires and emergencies so that everyone is safer.”

Local resident Jordan Cortel echoed the message, saying these memories are especially important during difficult times.

“This is really important because things are not easy today,” Cortel said. “You can barely afford food and barely afford a house, so it’s important to take precautions.”

YFD encourages residents to take these steps seriously to protect themselves and their families during the cooler months.
