This cult classic ’90s sci-fi series has a new streaming home

The series was Straczynski’s idea; He has written the films since then Changeling And Ninja assassinand was co-creator of the Netflix series Sense8 with Lana and Lily Wachowski. Produced by Warner Bros. Television, the film premiered in syndication in 1993 and ran for four seasons before the fifth and final season aired on TNT. The series has often been viewed as a competitor to contemporary science fiction television series Star Trek: Deep Space Ninewhich also took place on a space station and revolved around the delicate peace between several alien species. It was far less episodic than many television series of the time; Each episode was viewed as a chapter in an ongoing, ongoing story, making it a precursor to many modern television shows. It was also one of the first series to use the then-novel medium of the Internet to cultivate its fan base, as Straczynski and the other creators of the series frequently went online to discuss the series with their fans.



What is “Babylon 5” about?

Babylon 5 takes place in the year 2257 on the space station of the same name. Humanity has ventured into space and fought devastating wars with several alien species. Now all species mix and do business on Babylon 5, even as intergalactic tensions simmer both within and without. The station was originally commanded by Jeffrey Sinclair (Michael O’Hare); After O’Hare left the series after a single season for personal reasons, John Sheridan took over as the network’s director (Bruce Boxleitner). Other notable residents of the station include deputy Susan Ivanona (Claudia Christian), security chief Michael Garibaldi (Jerry Doyle) and a series of alien ambassadors, including the placid Delenn (Mira Furlan), the self-righteous G’Kar (Andreas Katsulas) and the mercurial Londo Mollari (Peter Jurasik).


Although the series ended in 1998, it had a long afterlife. The spinoff series crusadewhich took place five years after the series ended, was canceled after a single season on TNT, and was followed by several failed spin-offs that never progressed beyond the political stage. Last year, the series’ surviving cast members reunited for an animated film: Babylon 5: The Way Home. Straczynski recently worked on a reboot of the series, which is currently in development at The CW.
