This is how much your stomach will expand after a big meal – and the size will shock you

Your waistline doesn’t deceive you – it’s not just the Grinch’s heart that’s growing three sizes this season.

After enjoying a delicious holiday bread, your stomach expands generously to accommodate an extra portion or two, which would explain the cozy pants after eating.

While the stomach is typically the size of a soda can, it can grow to the size of a 2-liter bottle of liquid, which is good news for those who want an extra piece of cake.

“The size will quadruple or more,” said Dr. Arthur Beyder, a resident in medicine and physiology at the Mayo Clinic, told LiveScience.

He compared the smooth muscles of the stomach to a “rubber band” because the muscle can contract after being stretched for a long time.

“If you pull it, it will spring back,” he added.

This is particularly useful when the body consumes large amounts of food at once, such as at a feast or when mindlessly snacking in front of the TV.

While competitive eaters are capable of filling their bellies with up to 4 liters of food, the average person would not be able to achieve this despite the stomach’s ability to expand.

However, if you feel overly full after another serving of turkey or potatoes, Beyder advises against lying down, as it can lead to acid reflux. Instead, he recommended a walk, which Live Science says can aid digestion.

Other experts also recommend drinking plenty of water after a hearty meal.

“Leftover Thanksgiving food is amazing, so you don’t have to eat it all the first time,” Beyder said.

“Sit there and talk for 15 minutes before going back for seconds.”
