This is the amount that conferences contribute to each team in the College Football Playoff

With the College Football Playoff just around the corner, this will be the first year the bracket will expand from just four to 12 teams. But it also means there are some changes to payouts to college conferences where schools compete in the playoffs.

The Football Bowl Division, commonly referred to as the FBS, is the top division of college football in the United States and consists of over 100 teams in 10 conferences. But of those 100 teams, only 12 make it to the College Football Playoff.

Each conference receives different payouts based on the number of teams in the conference that make it to the College Football Playoff. However, the further these teams advance, the more money they can make for their conference.

For the 2024-2025 College Football Playoff:

  1. A conference receives $300,000 for each of its teams in the College Football Playoff, which corresponds to the NCAA Academic Progress Rate, which is essentially a team-based metric used to hold colleges accountable for the academic performance of their student-athletes should be.
  2. A conference receives $4 million for each team that makes it to the 12-team CFP and another $4 million for each team that advances to the quarterfinals (eight schools).
  3. A conference receives $6 million for each team that reaches the semifinals (four schools) and an additional $6 million for each team that reaches the national championship game (two schools).
  4. Each team participating in the College Football Playoff receives $3 million to cover costs per round.
