Thomas Cards Record-Tying 62, robe

Ponte Vedra Beach, Florida – the crowd gathered around the famous 17th hole of the TPC Sawgras. Justin Thomas had just hit it on 18 feet on the island green – a satisfactory result – but it was what he had made in the previous 16 holes, the fans asked for his name.

After Thomas had started his second round at 6:00 am around 134th place and 12 shots behind the leader, she had transformed TPC Sawgras into his playground, poured 10 birdies over 16 holes and shot up the ranking of the players of the player championship. The putt at 17 had just enough speed to give Thomas his 11th Birdie of the Day, a tournament record. His lonely bogey at 18 did not affect the round of the day-a 62, which gave Tom Hoge’s course record in 2023 band and Thomas a whopping 16-shot difference between Thursday and Friday.

“It was one of the best rounds I played,” he said. “I had the feeling that I did incredible work to keep my eyes forward, stop my blind, not to look back, look forward, look forward, something like that. It was only: How can I put this ball into the fairway from tea? And how can I then do birdie and repeat us.”

In a way, the way of thinking, which Thomas’ dream round fueled, was the same that she held away from being even better.

When Thomas approached the 18th tea and colored the light in the late afternoon in an orange color, the crowd grew around him, excited about the opportunity to experience history. Thomas said he was not exactly aware that he could set up the course record. The only thing in his head, he said, was to make another birdie. But after putting his fairway wood from tea into the right round, the two-time major champion had a difficult shot.

“When I missed the Fairway, Birdie was out of the question and then I tried to meet something other than the green,” said Thomas. “The Rough grabbed the face enough to shoot it down to the left, and with the swing of this ball it is obviously going into the water.”

From behind the 18th Green stood the father and coach of Thomas, Mike, and watched his son took a penalty drop 54 meters from the hole. He had to keep it to break Par and the course record, but an up-and-down was still important to tie it. After a whole day with fairways and Greens grind Thomas. It hit a high, arched shot that landed like a feather and remained 22 inches from the hole.

Mike clapped as loud as the rest of the fans, and when Thomas knocked for Bogey and a 62, he turned to the rest of his family.

“That is something special there,” he said.

As Thomas explained after his round, the 78 on Thursday was “absolutely terrible in every respect”, but it gave him the time to believe to talk to several people about it, including his wife Jill, to believe that, as he put it, it was “a fluke”.

“I was much more frustrated and annoyed about how I was mentally,” said Thomas. “Jill just listened to a long time last night. She was great. I just stayed positive and stayed forward and remember that I play a lot of golf, but the most difficult part was to come to this attitude when we started today.”

As soon as Thomas was in this way of thinking, he started. He made Birdies in the first two holes and then added three more before making the curve. Then, during the holes 11-14, Thomas became glossy, made four birdies and turned his round from a special into a historical one. In the end, Thomas had done 114 feet of putts and achieved 3.6 lines in his approach game.

He wrote to his ability to remain present.

“It is one of the most difficult things. I think it is probably the best attribute (Scottie Scheffler) how good he is able to stay present and stay at the moment,” said Thomas. “It is just as much an ability as it is able to hire a wedge to a certain distance or to control your distance. I hadn’t done it so well in a round in a very long time, so I’m probably more proud of it today from the score.”

Thomas now has a shot to fight at the weekend. He bound 29. And only seven shots behind Leadern Min Woo Lee and Akshay Bhatia. It is even more important that Thomas takes the opportunity to play in this gusty atmosphere with a wind of up to 30 miles per hour late Saturday afternoon and until Sunday.

“I love playing under these conditions. I just think that they have to be creative and it is difficult,” said Thomas. “Obviously I am enthusiastic and I will lose weight as much as possible, but yes, as soon as I am up to date tomorrow, the coach (Nick) Saban effect: 24 hours, enjoy it and I have a T -shirt time tomorrow. This is all that is important to me, and I will only try to get back to leave it.”
