Three free agents who could be of use to Tottenham

Here is a list of three players that Tottenham Hotspur could consider as free agents in the upcoming transfer windows.

By now we all know how Daniel Levy and ENIC work – and at a reasonable price. Whatever your opinion of the Spurs hierarchy, it is objectively true. It’s not ideal, but that’s the reality.

With this in mind, it is always particularly useful for Spurs to make value for money signings. Players who are not expensive but can contribute something to the squad.

Here are three players with expiring contracts who would add something to Spurs’ first-team squad. Note: This does not include the already well-documented players such as Angel Gomes, Jonathan David, Kyle Walker-Peters, etc.

1. Ola Aina

Ola Aina is currently having a very good season at Nottingham Forest and has developed a reputation as a reliable full-back. The 28-year-old has been a very consistent player for Forest since his move from Turin in the summer of 2023.

Although Aina is a full Nigeria international with 44 caps to her name, she was born and raised in England and would qualify as a homegrown player – which is always handy.

Of course, he’s a great player at the top, and the Spurs wouldn’t add a subpar player just to be a homegrown player.

What is crucial is that Aina can cover both sides as a full-back. While Archie Gray generally does well there, it is clear that he is a midfielder by nature.

Ange doesn’t seem to like Djed Spence and the full-back pairing of Pedro Porro + Destiny Udogie is already being pushed too hard. Homegrown, reliable and experienced depth on both sides seems sensible.

2. Mario Lemina

Lemina is currently at Wolves and has consistently proven his quality during his time with the West Midlands outfit.

Capable of playing as a defensive midfielder, as a box-to-box player or even as a centre-back in recent games, the Gabonese midfielder would offer real quality and versatility to the Spurs squad.

Lemina may be known more for his ball skills, but he is also a very tenacious player. His 3.0 tackles per game in the Premier League is 0.3 more per game than any Spurs player and over 1 more per game than any midfielder at the club.

Of course, you have to take into account that the Wolves have significantly less possession of the ball, but impressive numbers can definitely be expected.

1. Frank Anguissa

Another midfielder, but positions of greater need have either been linked (and, as mentioned, these players avoided) and/or in a position where there isn’t much on the market, meaning Spurs are spending money in those areas must.

The 29-year-old already has Premier League experience, having played for Fulham in the 18/19 and 20/21 seasons.

He has since moved to Napoli and started 36 games in the 22/23 season, where they won their first title since (or before) Diego Maradona.

The midfielder is persistent and often operates in midfield, but is also excellent on the ball.

His 2.7 successful dribbles per game in the 20/21 Premier League season were the third most of any player in the league this season.
