The San Diego Padres are reportedly listening to trade offers for a variety of their star players in an effort to save some salary to make room for other expenses.

One of the players rumored to be on the trade block is first baseman Luis Arraez. The left-handed hitter has a career batting average of .323.

One team that could use a high-average, low-strikeout hitter is the Seattle Mariners. Zachary Rymer of Bleacher Report recently suggested that the Mariners would be the best fit for Arraez and even suggested a trade package that would send the left-hander to Seattle.

Here is the deal proposed by Rymer that would send Arraez to the Mariners:

  • Seattle Mariners receive: 1B Luis Arraez
  • The San Diego Padres receive: DH Mitch Garver, INF Michael Arroyo (No. 12 prospect)

“So the Mariners you may have heard of are not very good at hitting the ball,” Rymer wrote. “But just in case, know that Seattle hitters have ranked in the bottom five of the American League for strikeouts each of the last six seasons. And right now they just happen to have a chance at first base.”

“With their payroll potentially already maxed out, a cash-neutral deal would best suit Seattle. This could work for the Padres as well, but likely only if they can use such a deal to effectively purchase a prospect from the talent-rich Mariners.”

Arraez would be a great asset to Seattle. He scores a high average and almost never strikes out.

Garver has been an above-average catcher for most of his career, but he is 33 years old, so his best years are probably behind him. Arroyo is a very talented infield prospect who is coming off an excellent 2024 season.

This deal makes sense for both sides and would be the Mariners’ dream.
