Tips and tricks for using space heaters safely and comfortably in cold weather

MONROE, La. (KNOE) – Meteorologists are forecasting a strong front that will bring temperatures into the mid-20s on the night of December 5th through the morning of December 6th by the ArkLaMiss day on December 6th.

When temperatures are low, you will be reminded of the safety of the heater.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, portable heaters are the second leading cause of home fires in the United States. Entergy says the space can be used safely and comfortably with a few precautions.

Entergy offers the following tips for using a space heater safely:

  • WHEN BUYING A ROOM HEATER:
    • Buy one that is certified for safe operation by Underwriters Laboratories or another nationally recognized testing organization
    • Look for space heaters with a guard around the heating element
    • Consider the size you want to heat – a heater that is too small or too large for an area can waste energy without providing additional comfort
  • USE A SPACE HEATER SAFELY
    • Keep children and pets away from space heaters
    • Never leave a space heater running when you sleep or leave the area
    • Place the heater at least three feet away from bedding, furniture, and curtains, or where towels or other materials could fall on them and start a fire
    • Do not place heaters where they may become wet – corrosion or damage to heater parts may result in fire or electric shock
    • Place the heater on a flat, non-flammable surface (no carpets or rugs).
    • Do not use extension cords to connect space heaters. Do not hide cables under rugs or rugs
    • Never store flammable liquids near a space heater – they can be ignited by an electrical spark
    • Do not use fuel-powered space heaters indoors. Without adequate ventilation, carbon monoxide poisoning can occur
    • Keep the heater in safe operating condition

During cold weather, it’s also important to remember the three Ps – pets, plants and pipes.
