Tom Brady, top coach of the Raiders

The Las Vegas Raiders are completing their third coaching search in the last four years and have acquired one of the most experienced candidates on the market to bring stability to the franchise.

According to multiple media reports, the Raiders will hire former Seattle Seahawks coach Pete Carroll as their next head coach. Carroll will become the oldest head coach in NFL history after coaching his first game with the Raiders, but will continue to look to bring his energetic, culture-focused approach to Las Vegas.

Carroll’s return to the NFL comes after he spent the 2024 season without a coach. The 2025 season will be his 19th season leading an NFL team with four different franchises, and his experience could prove valuable to a Raiders team that needs to change direction.

Here’s a look at the biggest winners and losers from Carroll’s rumored move to the Raiders.

Since Jon Gruden resigned from his position after emails containing racist, homophobic and misogynistic comments he sent while working for ESPN were leaked to the media, the Raiders have struggled to find head coaching stability. Carroll gives them one of the best culture creators in the NFL and a proven winner to boot.

Carroll has a career record of 170-120-1 in his 18 seasons as an NFL head coach, winning Super Bowl 48 with the Seahawks. He may not take the Raiders to such heights right away, but Carroll’s teams have had one in 11 of his last 12 seasons Track record established. In comparison, the Raiders have only had 11 winning seasons since 1984, so this attitude certainly raises their standards.

Carroll didn’t appear ready to be done coaching in the 2024 NFL offseason. Here’s what he said about his coaching future on Seattle Sports’ Brock & Salk Show just two days before he resigned as head coach of the Seahawks.

“I plan on coaching this team. I told you I love these guys,” Carroll said. “I would love to do that and see how far we can go.”

So it’s no surprise that Carroll jumped at the chance to return to the NFL. Still, it was unclear whether he would get a chance since he is expected to be the oldest coach in league history when he returns to the sidelines. Now he’s done it, and the opportunity to build another once-proud West Coast program seems like a perfect fit for Carroll’s unique coaching skills.

Brady joined the Raiders as a part-time owner in 2024. He then helped them land Carroll, one of the most proven coaching candidates on the market.

Initially, it appeared as if Brady and the Raiders were going through a difficult recruiting cycle after Ben Johnson decided to move to the Chicago Bears despite interest from Las Vegas. Brady and Co. recovered quickly, and bringing in a successful veteran like Carroll should help restore the Raiders’ image somewhat and hopefully put an end to Mark Davis’ ever-revolving coaching carousel.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Wilson wanted to join the Raiders in the 2024 NFL offseason. Given his relationship with Carroll, could he have a chance at that in 2025?

Towards the end of the quarterback’s tenure with the Seahawks, there were reports of tension between Wilson and Carroll. However, The Athletic’s Jeff Howe reports that the two parties have “mended fences” since their rocky split; and Wilson said in 2024 that he had a “good relationship” with Carroll and flew to Seattle to celebrate the coach’s resignation from his coaching position.

“He was like a father figure to me,” Wilson said of Carroll on the I AM ATHLETE podcast. “For me it was the love that was there when I went back to Pete. I had no hatred in my heart. Just love. Only love in my heart.”

With that in mind, Las Vegas seems like a more realistic landing spot for the 36-year-old Wilson. The Raiders need a filler and Carroll’s history with Wilson could make him the ideal candidate for the job.

The Titans own the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft and are probably hoping they can trade him to a quarterback-needy team for a ton of picks. Their ability to do so may have decreased by one following Carroll’s hiring.

While Carroll was in Seattle, the Seahawks never made a deal in the first round of the NFL Draft. Plus, they never drafted a quarterback before the third round during his tenure and were willing to trust players like Matt Flynn and Geno Smith as relatively untested starters. It’s hard to imagine Carroll changing his philosophy unless he and new general manager John Spytek are enamored with one of the top quarterbacks in the 2025 NFL Draft.

Carroll’s draft history is bad news for the 2025 NFL Draft class in general, which is already considered weak at quarterback. Again, Carroll and Spytek could potentially fall in love with a top quarterback, but if not, they would be more likely to spend their early pick on a difference-maker at another position. Then they would target a mid-round signal caller to compete with a veteran like Wilson.

With that in mind, dreams of the Raiders becoming a third top-10 quarterback landing spot seem unlikely. That leaves fewer landing spots for hopeful first-round quarterback prospects.

The Cowboys have reportedly contacted Carroll about her head coaching position, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. Of course, they didn’t get him, making Carroll another high-profile candidate who won’t be joining the Cowboys.
