Tom Hardy’s flop becomes a streaming hit after disappointing at the box office

The Tom Hardy film, The Bike Riders, It failed to find a significant audience at the box office earlier this year, but became a hit after it was added to streaming service Peacock.

The 1960s piece from director Jeff Nichols focuses on Benny (Austin Butler), a young biker who joins a new Chicago-based gang called The Vandals, led by Hardy’s Johnny, but soon falls between his He is torn between his lifestyle and his girlfriend Kathy, played by Jodie Comer.

The crime drama, which also stars Michael Shannon, Mike Faist and Norman Reedus, is based on the photography book of the same name by Danny Lyon.

Although made for a relatively modest budget of $40 million, the film struggled to recoup its costs and only managed to gross $35 million at the box office, despite positive reviews and a 75 percent rating on Rotten Tomatoes.

All is not lost for the film, however, as new data from blog Reelgood shows it is the tenth most popular film across all streaming platforms for the week of August 22-28, after being released on US service Peacock . It is also available to rent on YouTube, Amazon Prime, Google Play and Apple TV.

Other films on the list included the original Foreigner from 1979, The instigators with Matt Damon and Casey Affleck on Apple TV, jackpot with John Cena and Awkwafina on Amazon Prime and A Quiet Place: Day One on Paramount+.

Interestingly is at the top of the list Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga which also fell well short of expectations at the box office at the beginning of the year. The highly anticipated prequel to the hugely successful 2015 film Mad Max: Fury Road earned just $172.8 million, falling far short of the projected $350 million to $375 million needed to turn a profit.

New fans of The Bikeriders may have been taken aback by Hardy’s unconventional Midwest accent for the role. In conversation with diversityHardy said he wanted his performance to defy expectations.
