With 2.2 million tomorrow, Yellowstone is about as large as Rhode Island and Delaware. Seasonal parking workers help to manage and operate their five park entrances, almost 1,000 miles backcountry trails, seven park campsites with 450 campsites, 52 picnic areas and 11 visitor centers, museums and contact stations.

Yellowstone has about 300 permanent employees, but usually hires 200 or more seasonal workers. Yellowstone managers usually want to fill these seasonal places until mid-March so that they are ready if the park opens up automatic traffic from mid-April. Even a seasonal job like emptying dash cans is of crucial importance in Yellowstone, in which garbage has to be collected every day from numerous containers throughout the park so that they do not become a source of food for grizzlies and other wildlife.

Others are concerned about security in the parks.
